About

Computation as a creative collaborator

Angelos Barmpoutis is a Professor of Digital Arts and Sciences and coordinator of research and technology at the Digital Worlds Institute, University of Florida College of the Arts, with affiliate faculty appointments in the Department of Computer & Information Science and Engineering and the Center for the Arts, Migration, and Entrepreneurship.

Since 2010, as the Institute’s inaugural tenure-track faculty member, he has helped build an interdisciplinary academic unit bridging the arts with other disciplines — developing curricula that now serve more than 500 undergraduates a year, alongside a graduate program in immersive technologies. His research treats computational systems not as production tools but as creative collaborators: systems that expand artistic expression, advance computer vision and AI methods, and generate real societal impact, from the concert hall to the clinic.

He directs the Digital Innovation and Public Experience Design lab in the College of the Arts. He was named UF Research Foundation Professor (2020–2023) and Teacher of the year (2017), and currently chairs the Interactive and Emerging Media curricular area at UF.

        Research practice

        Interdisciplinary creativity in action

        I approach each project as a design problem with social, cultural, and scientific dimensions.

        That interdisciplinary model shapes how I teach, mentor, and collaborate: I work across the arts, computer science, engineering, health, and humanities in order to produce research that is both technically robust and meaningfully engaged with the communities it serves.

        I engage digital arts and science students in all of my research projects as a hands-on learning experience, where they work directly on practical problems and contribute to research in action. Our process begins with the physical world: we observe material surfaces, movement, light, and form, then translate those insights into digital models, immersive environments, and custom visual systems.

              Courses

              I teach Digital Arts and Sciences students to design, build, test, and reflect critically on immersive systems as both creative artifacts and research instruments.

              Undergraduate Course

              Game Engine Development

              This course asks students to build their own game engine rather than treat Unity or Unreal as a black box. They learn the architecture behind real-time rendering, shaders, scene graphs, input systems, resource management, and engine-level design decisions that shape how interactive experiences behave and feel.

              Graduate Course

              Interdisciplinary Research Seminar

              In this seminar, students design novel immersive experiences in Virtual or Augmented Reality with haptic feedback, form a hypothesis, conduct a user study, evaluate results, and prepare work for international conference publication.

              Graduate Course

              Entertainment Technology

              In this course students learn how digital media, real-time graphics, interactive systems, and emerging technologies can be combined to design engaging experiences for audiences across physical and virtual environments.

              Movement, Media, and Machines

              In this course students work with live motion-tracking technologies, from infrared sensing systems to computer-vision and AI-based approaches, and learn how captured movement can drive virtual characters, interactive media, and immersive environments.

              Leadership

              Service and Academic Leadership

              Throughout my career, I have viewed academic leadership as an opportunity to build institutions, programs, and communities that enable others to succeed. As one of the founding faculty members of the Digital Worlds Institute, I have played an active role in shaping its academic and interdisciplinary development through strategic planning, curriculum development (Bachelor of Arts in Digital Arts and Sciences), faculty recruitment (chairing 5 search committees and serving on 10 additional searches), graduate education (Master of Arts in Digital Arts and Sciences), and the creation of new programs and initiatives. As the Research and Technology coordinator, I have worked to ensure that the Institute is at the forefront of innovation in the fields of interactive media and emerging technologies, quadroupling the annual number of publications and grants.

              As Chair of the Interactive and Emerging Media curricular area, I provide academic leadership across curriculum, faculty development, and interdisciplinary collaboration. I have mentored junior faculty through the tenure and promotion process, facilitated collaborations among faculty with complementary expertise, guided curricular innovation, and worked to position our programs for continued growth.

              “I view academic leadership as an opportunity to build institutions that empower others to succeed. Effective leadership extends beyond administration; it involves creating environments where interdisciplinary collaboration flourishes, innovative programs emerge, and faculty and students are supported in achieving their highest potential.”

              In my leadership roles I always prioritize the creation of new communities around emerging areas of scholarship. In 2026, I founded the Collision Event, an interdisciplinary forum bringing together artists, engineers, scientists, designers, and other scholars to explore ideas at the boundaries of their disciplines and generate new collaborations. Initiatives such as this reflect my broader commitment to building academic environments in which disciplinary boundaries are crossed and become opportunities for discovery.
